I got to the track for three runs yesterday and thought Id share the results.

First my car: 83 cutlass with an 86 vin9 307
Stock engine thru manifolds
single 2.5" exhaust thru magnaflow muffler
B&M TH350 w/TCI 1800 stall converter
3.73 posi rear, stock tires

run1: bone stock
run2: carb with modified secondaries
run 3: modded carb and ECM with hypertech chip

run 1 run 2 run 3
60ft 2.437 2.444 2.352
660 10.603 10.602 10.266
mph1 65.04 65.74 67.28
1320 16.685 16.578 16.093
mph2 80.52 82.52 84.36

I was pleased with the results, they were right where I expected. A little more tweaking to the setup and I think this setup will get into the hi 15s.

Certainly not a world beater but its a really nice driver/cruiser.

If you had the proper 2004r, you would have hit high 15's. Just shows that chip does do something. Probably pulls or adds timing at full throttle.

yea a 4th gear would have been nice. In lieu of that, I am going to swap in 3.08 ratio gears for use with the th350.

I was both surprised and pleased by the chip's added performance.

You wouldn't use 4th gear or overdrive in the quarter its only for cruising ie lowering your highway rpms & improving mileage. It would change the final drive ratio of that 3.73 to a 2.49. So it retains the full acceleration of the 3.73 but saves your motor & improves your mileage even better than steping down to a 3.08. The 200-4r is also a little lighter & more efficient than the th350.

I get what youre saying.

I altered the governor to shift lower because I could feel the power nose over when trying to rev 4500+. I think it is the 7A heads that are restricting things. Shift points about 4200rpm are just about right for my combo.

That, along with the little stock tires and the 3.73s I think would have got me into 4th gear on the track.

The car was originally a V6 car with TH350 so it was just easier to stick with the 3 speed than swap in a 200-4r, besides which I had the trans all built and waiting for a car to go in.

If I was leaving the 3.73s in there I would definitely use an OD trans.

Don't forget the steeper first ratio, not a big difference but still noticeable. That and vin 9's 2400 stall convertor, supposedly flash around 2000 rpm. Does yours flash around 1800 rpm?

I'd guess you'd only get into 3rd gear with a 200-4R. That's what I have but I have 2:56 rear gears. With my vinY having similar mods to your vin9 and shifting at about 4500, the best I got was a 16.91. I crossed the line topping out 2nd gear. Comparing my best to your 2nd run, without the chip yet you still having the hotter engine, we were only .34 of a second apart. The only thing I can attribute that to would be my 1st and 2nd gear ratios.
I'm not really trying to make a point; I'm just comparing notes. :p

Those are the things holding you back from getting good times. Duel exhaust works wonders over single exhaust, 1800 stall is bit on the puny side, and those 60 ft times aren't very good with some of that having to do with the low stall.

To compare, my stock 85 442 with nothing but minor emissions removal and better exhaust ( though still not technically true duals ) ran a 15.54 @ 88mph with a 2.17 60 ft and that was on my first and only true run with it so I'm sure I could've tweaked a bit more out of it. I see no reason your car shouldn't run close to that. I would start with the exhaust.

yea i should mention i wasnt trying to "get up on the converter" at all.

green light....mash pedal...go.

I dont have a tach to tell where the TCI converter flashes to but it is pretty tight for track usage.

Same thing I did. I didn't even realize I was doing it though until I got home.
